started as Fireproof
Products Company in 1954 to manufacture a wood
fiber and cement structural roof deck trade named
PetriCal. In the late 1970's a new manufacturing
plant was built on the complex to make urethane
insulating foam enhancing the insulating properties
of the PetriCal panels. Around this time experimentation
began with a new form of roof insulation for
pitched roof buildings called "nail base roof insulation"
which allowed for roof insulation for difficult to
insulate structures such as cathedral ceiling buildings
while giving an area to attach shingles or tile. The
new product, ThermaCal, began production in 1979.
Cornell subsequently developed Vent-Top
ThermaCal® to not only provide insulation under the
shingles but ventilation to keep shingle temperatures
down in hot climates and retard ice damming in cold
climates. This was a revolution in the steep slope
roofing inudustry.
Now, typical cathedral ceiling structures such as churches could benefit from extended warranties offered by shingle manufacturers through the use Vent-Top ThermaCal®. Schools and office structures could now be economically constructed with pitched roofs that fit in with the surrounding neighborhood.
